Olori Omo-Oba Otunba Olasubomi Michael Balogun (OMB) – A Guiding Light, An Icon of Inspiration and Support. 9 March 1934 – 19 May 2023.

“Who says you need an extensive network of friends or business associates to make it in life? Or that you must be everywhere and know everyone? Akin, focus on the net worth of your network instead! Eniyan laso mi!” He advised.

A single phone call altered the course of my career. Yes, you heard it right—a phone call. I have briefly mentioned this call before and will elaborate further in my upcoming book, “PATH – The Road to Finding Purpose, Building Capacity, and Living Your Dream.”

OMB, a true Guiding Light, had a profound impact on my life. It is still difficult for me to accept that I am using the word “was” to describe him. He was undoubtedly a blessing bestowed upon many of us by The Almighty GOD.

From the moment I first met OMB, his genuine warmth, curiosity, and insightful perspectives captivated me. Despite his remarkable achievements and legendary status as a business magnate, he welcomed me with open arms, treating me as if I were one of his own. He never wavered in his belief in my abilities.

His support became one of the cornerstones upon which I built my confidence, knowing that I had an industry titan rooting for my success. OMB humorously said, “Akin, I wonder how we discovered you!”

He would often introduce me to his friends, and I treasure the unforgettable moments I spent listening to him, a true icon whose presence reverberated far and wide—Otunba Olasubomi Balogun—a name that commanded respect and was a wellspring of inspiration and wisdom.

Through his impactful actions and unwavering support, he left an indelible mark on me and my journey as the pioneer CEO of Credit Direct. One of the most remarkable instances of OMB’s approval came when Credit Direct faced a significant hurdle in the form of substantial outstanding debts in Oyo State and Ogun State during the 2015/16 recession.

It was a time of uncertainty and unimaginable pressure from all sides, as the burden seemed insurmountable. Everyone gave good advice and encouragement, yet, in those darkest hours, OMB extended his helping hand without hesitation. He gave me handwritten notes to these governors, asking for their help on my behalf.

His words of wisdom profoundly resonate within me, guiding my decision-making process and nurturing a resilient mindset. He would say to me,

“Akin, true success lies not only in personal achievements but also in the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others. I keep hearing good things about you from your Chairman.”

When the opportunity arose to honor him, I didn’t hesitate to dedicate Credit Direct’s iconic headquarters at Ikeja GRA, Lagos, to him and his legacy.

OMB was not only a great philanthropist but also a remarkable leader who set high standards in our banking sector. As I reflect on my journey, I am profoundly grateful for the privilege of knowing Otunba Olasubomi Balogun. His unwavering support, wise counsel, and guidance have shaped my leadership and inspired me to strive for greatness. His dedication to excellence and significant contributions in resolving outstanding debts in Oyo State and Ogun State will forever be etched in my memory.

During our last meeting at the end of last year, he provided wise counsel and expressed gratitude to God for the remarkable life he had been given. I had shared with him my desire for him to write the foreword for my book, a request he graciously accepted. Ah! Among many things, I will miss that as well!

OMB! Olori Omo-Oba Otunba Olasubomi Michael Balogun, you were a true industry icon, and your legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Your remarkable impact on my life and unwavering commitment to uplifting others will forever be cherished.

Thank you for embracing, guiding me, and being a shining light in my journey with Credit Direct and in life.

Rest on Baba,

Akin Ademosu.
